Brent Kary, a leader and friend to many in the Bismarck and Standing Rock communities, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer that had metastasized to the liver in 2008. As with everything he does, he has been brave in his battle and has amazed those around him with his wit and courage while he has faced this terrible disease. Although his doctors told him just months ago that the disease was terminal, Brent has continued to live a life that touches those in his path.

Born in Bismarck, Brent was raised in Solen and attended St. Mary’s High School and the University of Mary obtaining a degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences. Brent worked at the Peace Pipe Indian Center and for Sitting Bull College, along with serving on various committees and boards for American Indian issues. His visions and ideas for the Standing Rock Sioux community led him to the University of North Dakota to study law. Brent graduated in May 2008, and was going to be sworn in with his classmates in September when he was hospitalized for stomach problems that caused him to miss the swearing-in ceremony. Just days later he was diagnosed with cancer.

Brent went on to be sworn in as an attorney and served the Three Affiliated Tribes as a prosecutor. He subsequently joined the Severin, Ringsak and Morrow law firm where he worked as a private attorney in addition to his role with Three Affiliated Tribes. While beginning his career as an attorney, Brent also underwent chemotherapy and several surgeries including a liver resection at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Brent was also hired as General Counsel for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe where he worked to fulfill the dreams he had for his tribe, and looked for ways to encourage the younger generation to pursue an education and return home to follow in his footsteps. After spending nearly half a year healthy and off of treatment, Brent found out that the cancer in his liver had returned and had spread to his lungs and the lining of his stomach.

Brent is the proud father of two children, Shalique Brie-nne Kary (16) and Drayton Ivan Allen Kary (9). He enjoys spending time with his family and friends, teasing those close to him, playing softball and watching sports, telling stories to anyone who will listen, and eating deserts. At the age of 40, Brent has friends of every age and from all walks of life. One cannot help but admit he has a contagious personality.
